Depending on the specific role youre applying for, these could be the most important computer skills to list on your resume: Network configuration Tech support and troubleshooting WAN/LAN and routers Security systems Cloud management 7. How to List Computer Skills on Your Resume First, we recommend using a resume template with two columns. Grouping your information like this makes it easier to read. You can also simply place your skills section at the top of the page for extra emphasis. Both options will catch the hiring managers eye, and help quickly prove youre the skilled candidate the hiring manager is looking for. Check out how these key technical skills are presented on a software engineers resume: Skills Section: Hard Skills vs Soft Skills All the computer skills mentioned this far are prime examples of hard skills. That means they can only be learned through training either by self-study or taking a course. Soft skills, on the other hand, are personality traits employers look for, such as attention to detail and teamwork. To show youre a well-rounded candidate, you should include both hard and soft skills on your resume. This creates a more balanced application, and makes you seem like an actual human rather than a highly-trained robot (or worse, someone with no ability to do the job whatsoever). Heres a mix of hard and soft skills for a marketing assistant. To make things even clearer, our candidate grades their abilities in each. Its not a game changer, but it can be an effective visual trick if used tastefully. Quantify Your Computer Skills Once youve chosen which computer skills to put on your resume, its time to prove you can use them in a way that contributes to the companys bottom line. Write what your computer skills helped you achieve by stating your accomplishments and measuring them, using numbers such as timeframes, percentages, and dollars. This is called quantification, and is key to writing an achievement oriented resume that impresses hiring managers. Not only does quantifying your skills prove you can drive results, but its a perfect invitation to being asked more questions during your interview. Heres an example from an IT specialist resume: Most candidates dont know how to correctly quantify their duties, so youll be ahead of the competition if you do this correctly. Put Computer Skills in Your Introduction Hiring managers can supposedly judge a resume in 6 seconds. When they look at yours, what will they see first? A clear skills section is one way to make a positive first impression. However, it doesnt explain how you applied your computer skills. You can give the hiring manager some additional insight by linking your skills to your achievements in your introduction. Writing a Resume Summary There are several effective ways to begin a resume that showcase your computer skills. We recommend writing a clear resume summary because it gets straight to the point. This format replaces a dull opening statement with concise bullet points. Your key skills are included with proof that you can get results. For example: Design: Create e-commerce websites using 8 programming languages. Optimization: Increased user clicks and customer purchases by over 25%. Leadership: Trained over 50 staff members to use internal functions. Awards: Winner of the CREATE+ Developer of the Year award 2018. A resume summary is simple to write by following this formula: Competency: example of computer skills and duty + result achieved An introduction like this is suitable for all levels of computer skills. Alternative Resume Introductions There are three other commonly used introduction formats that can also help you highlight your most relevant computer skills: Career / Resume Objective perfect for entry-level candidates targeting a basic computer skills resume at their first job Summary of Qualifications a great choice for senior positions where you need to summarize many technical abilities in a small space Professional / Resume Profile the most flexible introduction for computer skills. Use this when youre uploading your resume to job search sites Education and Certifications Were not done yet the final thing to do is add separate sections for your education and certifications. You earned these, so dont be shy. Display them where theyll be noticed. Remember: new graduates should focus on their education, but seasoned professionals should highlight their expertise. For those who have a mix of high level qualifications and on-the-job experience, highlight your education, certifications, and additional skills simultaneously with a creative resume template. 8. Summary (Four Takeaways) By now you should be equipped with all the tools necessary for effectively writing resume computer skills. To recap, follow these steps: Include your most relevant industry skills (or learn ones you dont know) Highlight them in your skills section Quantify your achievements and add computer skills to your introduction Get ready for the interviews to start rolling in To help you get started, we have an extensive library of free resume templates ready to download. 5 Ways to Keep Your Small Business Team Motivated

5 Ways to Keep Your Small Business Team Motivated 5 Ways to Keep Your Small Business Team Motivated You’ve probably listened to motivational speakers like Tony Robbins, who focus on how to make a better you. But, in your small business, you need to know how to motivate a team- not just yourself. And you need to help focus their motivation on factors that will allow your team to work together successfully. It’s not about self-actualization; it’s about success for your team and your business. Here are five ways to keep your small business team motivated. 1. Understand the Team’s Specific Carrots and Sticks When you’re working on motivating a company of 2000 people, you have to work with generalities. But when your team is five people, it is easy to learn what things they really like. (You should actually avoid sticks if at all possible.) For instance, a big catered lunch from everyone’s favorite restaurant may be a great way to celebrate the successful completion of a project. But, if your five-member team consists of one vegan, one person with religious diet restrictions, one with allergies to seafood and soy, one with gluten intolerance, and another one on a keto diet, a group lunch sounds implausible. Bonuses, praise, and time off are common carrots, but you need to determine what is specifically wanted by the group to choose the most effective carrot. You can approach motivation creatively but also ask your team members what they find motivating. Their answers may surprise you. 2. Become a Great Manager to Motivate Your Team Becoming a great manager is a serious challenge for most individuals. Very few companies offer effective management training, which means that you probably need to pursue training on your own. Gallup polls found that 75% of voluntary turnover is due to factors that the manager can influence. If your team members have one foot out of the door, they are not going to be motivated, so it’s time to get training. You can learn how to become a great manager by finding a mentor, taking a formal class, or hiring a coach. You can also read management books and apply what you’ve learned. No perfect answer exists that will work for every manager. But, when your team knows you are there for them- are supportive, honest, and have their backs- their motivation will increase. 3. Share the Big Picture to Motivate Your Team A lot of work is, well, work. You need to write reports. You need to file tax returns. Payroll runs every other week, rain or shine. Sometimes your team may only see their own portion of the job and their outlook can become depressing. Make sure your team gets the big picture view and knows how their piece fits in with everyone else’s. They need to understand why their work is necessary for the success of the whole team and the whole business. They need to know what happens to their work after it leaves their desk. Knowing how work coalesces is important for the good of the team, the clients, and the business as a whole. Understanding the big picture can help motivate your small business team to do a great job. 4. Fire the Bully to Motivate Your Team A Tiny Pulse study found that the number one way to get employees motivated to “go the extra mile” for the team is good camaraderie with their peers. You can’t force friendships, although you can encourage team building. More importantly, you can get rid of the people who tear their teammates down, or who work hard to put themselves at the top by stepping on everyone else. A good manager stops the bully in her tracks. Sometimes coaching can fix the problem, but other times you may need to fire the bully. No matter how good the bully is at her job, if she’s damaging the team, that person needs to go. Your team will become far more motivated if all of the team members practice positive workplace interaction. 5. Make the Physical Environment Pleasant to Motivate Your Team A team manager may have difficulty influencing the work environment the team experiences. You may find that the environment is out of your reach- if a manager above you is calling the shots. Acknowledge that this is tough but try to identify factors that you can affect. The Harvard Business Review found that access to natural light and views of the outdoors make employees happier with a better sense of wellbeing in the office. Happier employees are more motivated to perform productively. Likewise, an open office plan can actually make employees less effective, less collaborative, and less motivated. Another Harvard study found that people in open offices spend: 73% less time in face-to-face interactions67% more time on email75% more time on instant messenger This does not sound motivating or effective for your employees. Any physical environment where they don’t feel comfortable will affect their motivation. Make sure that your employees have space and the resources they need to do their job. The Bottom Line Overall, employee motivation comes and goes, so don’t panic if your team is having a dull day. As the manager of a team, you’ll need to keep motivation in the forefront. If your team isn’t working well, knowing how to motivate the team- and specifically your team- can make a world of difference. Get to know your people; provide support, praise, and resources; get rid of the bad apples, and you’ll find that your employees are motivated and effective.

Local, National, and Overseas Volunteer Opportunities

Local, National, and Overseas Volunteer Opportunities Local, National, and Overseas Volunteer Opportunities Those who choose to volunteer are given unique opportunities to develop leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational skills, etc. In addition, volunteering creates a sense of personal fulfillment and accomplishment not usually achieved in a typical work environment as well as offering the many personal rewards that occur when one decides to make a positive contribution in the lives of others. Volunteers are Getting Younger Although volunteers exist in all age groups, the number of young people in recent years interested in contributing and finding ways to give back has increased tremendously. There are a tremendous number of opportunities where students and new graduates can make themselves available and assist struggling groups and communities. Listed below is just a sample of the types of organizations that exist. Be sure to check for agencies and projects in local communities and for issues that are affecting local citizens in addition to all of the national and international organization that offer thousands of volunteer, internship, and job experiences to people around the world. The Corporation for National and Community Service The Corporation for National and Community Service was created to bring together Americans from all across the country and provide them with a way to give back to their individual communities and nation. It is an independent federal agency that accepts volunteers of all ages and backgrounds and encourages citizenship, service, and responsibility among those who serve. It includes programs such as Senior Corps and AmeriCorps and is America’s largest grant maker supporting local, national service and volunteer programs. Action Without Borders Action Without Borders (AWB) is a nonprofit organization with offices in New York, Portland, Washington DC, and Buenos Aires. Thousands of opportunities for volunteers, interns, consultants, etc., exist on their website, Idealist.org. How to make your kids smarter in 10 scientific steps

How to make your kids smarter in 10 scientific steps How to make your kids smarter in 10 scientific steps I’ve explored the science behind  what makes kids happier, what  type of parenting works best  and what makes for  joyful families. But  what makes children - from babies up through the teen years - smarter? Here are 10 things science says can help:1) Music lessonsPlain and simple:  research show music lessons  make kids smarter: Compared with children in the control groups,  children in the music groups exhibited greater increases in full-scale IQ. The effect was relatively small, but it generalized across IQ subtests, index scores, and a standardized measure of academic achievement. In fact musical training helps  everyone,  young and old: A growing body of research finds musical training gives students learning advantages in the classroom. Now a Northwestern University study finds musical training can benefit Grandma, too, by offsetting some of the deleterious effects of aging.(More on what the music you love says about you  here.)2) The dumb jock is a mythDumb jocks are dumb because they spend more time on the field than in the library. But what if you make sure your child devotes time to both?Being in good shape  increases your ability to learn. After exercise people pick up new vocabulary words 20% faster.Via  Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain:Indeed, in a 2007 study of humans, German researchers found that people learn vocabulary words 20 percent faster following exercise than they did before exercise, and that the rate of learning correlated directly with levels of BDNF.A 3 month exercise regimen increased bloodflow to the  part of the brain focused on memory and learning by 30%.Via   Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain:In his study, Small put a group of volunteers on a three-month exercise regimen and then took pictures of their brains… What he saw was that the capillary volume in the memory area of the hippocampus increased by 30 percent, a truly remarkable change.(More on how exercise can make you and your kids smarter and happier  here.)3) Don’t read to your kids, read with themGot a little one who is learning to read?  Don’t let them just stare at the pictures in a book while you do all the reading.Call attention to the words. Read with them, not to them.  Research shows  it helps build their reading skills:…when shared book reading is enriched with explicit attention to the development of children’s reading skills and strategies, then shared book reading is an effective vehicle for promoting the early literacy ability even of disadvantaged children.(More on things most parents do wrong  here.)4) Sleep deprivation makes k ids stupidMissing an hour of sleep turns a sixth grader’s brain into that of a fourth grader.Via  NurtureShock:“A loss of one hour of sleep is equivalent to [the loss of] two years of cognitive maturation and development,”  Sadeh explained. There is a correlation between grades and average amount of sleep.Via  NurtureShock:Teens who received A’s averaged about fifteen more minutes sleep than the B students, who in turn averaged fifteen more minutes than the C’s, and so on.  Wahlstrom’s data was an almost perfect replication of results from an earlier study of over 3,000 Rhode Island high schoolers by Brown’s Carskadon. Certainly, these are averages, but the consistency of the two studies stands out. Every fifteen minutes counts.(More on how to sleep better  here.)5) IQ isn’t worth much without self-disciplineSelf-discipline beats IQ  at predicting who will be successful in life. From Charles Duhigg’s excellent book  The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life an d Business:Dozens of studies show that willpower is the single most important keystone habit for individual success…  Students who exerted high levels of willpower were more likely to earn higher grades in their classes and gain admission into more selective schools. They had fewer absences and spent less time watching television and more hours on homework. “Highly self-disciplined adolescents outperformed their more impulsive peers on every academic-performance variable,” the researchers wrote. “Self-discipline predicted academic performance more robustly than did IQ. Self-discipline also predicted which students would improve their grades over the course of the school year, whereas IQ did not.… Self-discipline has a bigger effect on academic performance than does intellectual talent.”Grades have more to do with  conscientiousness  than raw smarts.Via  How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character:…conscientiousness was the trait that best p redicted workplace success. What intrigues Roberts about conscientiousness is that it predicts so many outcomes that go far beyond the workplace. People high in conscientiousness get better grades in school and college; they commit fewer crimes; and they stay married longer. They live longer â€" and not just because they smoke and drink less. They have fewer strokes, lower blood pressure, and a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.Who does best in life? Kids with  grit.Via  Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.The best predictor of success, the researchers found, was the prospective cadets’ ratings on a noncognitive, nonphysical trait known as  â€œgrit”- defined as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.”(More on how to improve self-discipline  here.)6) Learning is an active processBaby Einstein and braintraining games  don’t work.In fact, there’s reason to believe they make kids  dumber.Via  Brain Rules for Baby: How to Raise a Smart and Happy Child from Zero to Five:The products didn’t work at all. They had no positive effect on the vocabularies of the target audience, infants 17-24 months. Some did actual harm.  For every hour per day the children spent watching certain baby DVD’s and videos, the infants understood an average of six to eight fewer words than infants who did not watch them.Real learning isn’t passive, it’s active. What does  Dan Coyle, author of  The Talent Code  recommend?  Stop merely reading and test yourself: Our brains evolved to learn by doing things, not by hearing about them. This is one of the reasons that, for a lot of skills, it’s much better to spend about two thirds of your time testing yourself on it rather than absorbing it. There’s a rule of two thirds. If you want to, say, memorize a passage, it’s better to spend 30 percent of your time reading it, and the other 70 percent of your time testing yourself on that knowledge.(More on how to teach your child to be a hard worker in school  here.)7) Treats can be a good thing - at the right timeOverall, it would be better if kids ate healthy all the time.  Research shows eating makes a difference in  children’s grades: Everybody knows you should eat breakfast the day of a big test. High-carb, high-fiber, slow-digesting foods like oatmeal are best, research shows. But what you eat a week in advance matters, too. When 16 college students were tested on attention and thinking speed, then fed a five-day high-fat, low-carb diet heavy on meat, eggs, cheese and cream and tested again, their performance declined. There are always exceptions. No kid eats healthy all the time.  But the irony is that  kids often get “bad” foods at the wrong time.Research  shows caffeine and sugar can be brain boosters:Caffeine and glucose can have beneficial effects on cognitive performance… Since these areas have been related to the sustained attention and working memory processes, results would suggest that combined caffeine and glucose could increase the efficiency of the attentional system. They’re also potent rewards kids love.So if kids are going to occasionally eat candy and soda  maybe it’s better to give it t o them while they study then when they’re relaxing.(More on the best way for kids to study  here.)  8) Happy kids = successful kidsHappier kids are more likely to turn into successful, accomplished adults.Via  Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents:…happiness is a tremendous advantage in a world that emphasizes performance. On average, happy people are more successful than unhappy people at both work and love. They get better performance reviews, have more prestigious jobs, and earn higher salaries. They are more likely to get married, and once married, they are more satisfied with their marriage. And what’s the first step in creating happier kids? Being a  happy parent.(More on how to raise happy kids  here.)9) Peer group mattersYour genetics and the genetics of your partner have a huge effect on your kids. But the way you raise your kids? Not nearly as much.Via Malcolm Gladwell’s  The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Differ ence:On things like measures of intellectual ability and certain aspects of personality, the biological children are fairly similar to their parents. For the adopted kids, however, the results are downright strange.  Their scores have nothing whatsoever in common with their adoptive parents: these children are no more similar in their personality or intellectual skills to the people who raised them, fed them, clothed them, read to them, taught them, and loved them for sixteen years than they are to any two adults taken at random off the street. So what does have an enormous affect on your children’s behavior? Their  peer group. We usually only talk about  peer pressure  when it’s a negative but more often than not, it’s a  positive.Living in a nice neighborhood, going to solid schools and making sure your children hang out with good kids can make a huge difference. What’s the easiest way for a college student to improve their GPA?  Pick a smart roommate.Via  The Happiness Advan tage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work:One study of Dartmouth College students by economist Bruce Sacerdote illustrates how powerful this influence is.  He found that when students with low grade-point averages simply began rooming with higher-scoring students, their grade-point averages increased.  These students, according to the researchers, “appeared to infect each other with good and bad study habits- such that a roommate with a high grade-point average would drag upward the G.P.A. of his lower-scoring roommate.”(More on the how others affect your behavior without you realizing it  here.)10) Believe in themBelieving your kid is smarter than average makes a difference. When teachers were told certain kids were sharper, those kids did better - even though the kids were selected at random.Via  The Heart of Social Psychology: A Backstage View of a Passionate Science:…Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson (1968) did the same study i n a classroom,  telling elementary school teachers that they had certain students in their class who were “academic spurters.” In fact, these students were selected at random. Absolutely nothing else was done by the researchers to single out these children. Yet by the end of the school year, 30 percent of the the children arbitrarily named as spurters had gained an average of 22 IQ points, and almost all had gained at least 10 IQ points.Sum up Music Lessons The Dumb Jock Is A Myth Don’t Read To Your Kids, Read With Them Sleep Deprivation Makes Kids Stupid IQ Isn’t Worth Much Without Self-Discipline Learning Is An Active Process Treats Can Be a Good Thing - At The Right Time Happy Kids = Successful Kids Peer Group Matters Believe In Them One final note:  Intelligence isn’t  everything.  Without ethics and empathy really smart people can be scary. As  P.J. O’Rourke  once said:Smart people don’t start many bar fights. But stupid people don’t build many hydrogen bombs. So if you want to learn how to raise a happier kid go  here  and a more well-behaved kid go  here.I hope this helps your child be brilliant.Join more than 320,000 readers.  Get a free weekly update via email  here.Related posts:Good Parenting Skills: 7 Research-Backed Ways to Raise Kids RightHow To Have A Happy Family â€" 7 Tips Backed By ResearchHow To Raise Happy Kids â€" 10 Steps Backed By ScienceThis article originally appeared at Barking Up the Wrong Tree.

Studies say drinking coffee can be good, unless youre doing this

Studies say drinking coffee can be good, unless you're doing this Studies say drinking coffee can be good, unless you're doing this It’s that time of the week when you need to hear news about how your daily consumption of coffee is killing you or making you stronger, or a combination of both - leaving you in a constant state of fear, panic or immense confidence as well as hyperactive because you just drank coffee.Ladders recently wrote about how the time of day you drink your first, second and third cup could have a major effect on your energy levels, but in addition to that, your choice of coffee additives may also be impacting your health. And you should probably pay attention, as  a study commissioned by the National Coffee Association of 3,000 Americans found that  64% of Americans drink a cup of coffee every day. This is a two-point increase from 2017 and the highest percentage in six years. In other words, we as a society are addicted to coffee.Coffee can help fend off diseasesCoffee can have some disease-reducing effects. A Harvard  Nurses Health Study  found that coffee has some preventative qualities a gainst type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and another study linked it to helping fight against the onset of Parkinson’s.Geoffrey James,  on Inc., suggests trying to get yourself to start drinking your coffee black, as the health benefits are immense. Black coffee can help boost memory, make you more intelligent, cleanses your gut, helps your heart, improves your workouts, etc., In other words, it is a miracle in a cup.But you may only be reaping these positive benefits if you are drinking your coffee a certain way, as in not adding in bags and bags of sugar and pouring in the creamer. But your additives can cause troubleBy adding two teaspoons of sugar to each cup and you have two to four cups each day, you are quickly surpassing the suggested amount of sugar by health associations. And don’t think you’re in the safe zone if you are just adding non-dairy creamer. That’s even worse. Most non-dairy creamer brands are full of sugar plus oils and trans fats on top of that and then artificial flavoring and you have one unhealthy drink in front of you. But that’s just a normal cup of coffee you are making. What about all the sugar utopias that are “coffee” drinks from Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks? Dunkin’ rolled out the Girl Scout-cookie flavored coffee (because we needed Thin Mints in liquid form) in February and Starbucks has managed to top the Willy Wonka go-to Unicorn Frappucino with something called the  Crystal Ball. It’s a frozen drink with peach flavoring, whipped cream, and crushed rock candy topping and we assume some caffeine is in there. All these additives won’t negate all the disease-reducing benefits of coffee, but they produce an onslaught of other things to worry about.

Study Women 30% less likely to be called in for an interview

Study Women 30% less likely to be called in for an interview Study Women 30% less likely to be called in for an interview Everybody knows about the pay gap but apparently, there’s a job-interview gap, too. Researchers at Universitat Pompeau Fabra in Spain used fake resumes of equally qualified men and women to apply for real jobs and found that women were 30% less likely than men to be selected for an in-person interview. The study was published in the European Sociological Review. For the study, researchers set out to discover if employers discriminated against women based on stereotypes or prejudices. They sent fake resumes from men and women aged 37 to 39-years-old to 1,372   job openings from a variety of occupations in Madrid and Barcelona.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The resumes were sent in pairs. In the first pair, both candidates had the same background, and the same qualifications and they differed by sex.In the second pair, one of the candidates would have a more advanced backgr ound and extra skills like speaking a language. Another factor they added was that one candidate would be a parent. The researchers also sent identical resumes to some open positions â€" one male, one female.ResultsThe resumes for male job candidates received callbacks for an interview 10.9% of the time, compared to 7.7% of the time when the same resume represented a female. From this, researchers calculated that the probability of receiving a call back for an interview as a female was 30% lower than for a man. They also found high gender discrimination among candidates with children and less discrimination among women with higher skills. The penalty drops to 23.4% if the women have a higher level of skills, and it also declines to a 20.3% lower callback probability if they do not have children. However, it drops to a 46.7% lower chance of being called in for an interview if they do have children.Ultimately, the authors wrote, “gender bias in recruitment is largely grounded in employ ers’ stereotypes rather than in prejudices.” That is, it isn’t about sexism so much as it is about how hard and how effectively they think women will work as mothers, for example. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
